At least 7 dead in severe storms, tornadoes in South and Midwest

WASHINGTON, Dec. 24 (UPI) — At least seven people have died and as intense storms moved through the South and Midwest, as thunderstorms are forecast for Thursday in the region.

A few strong to severe storms may manifest along a cold front from the southern Middle Atlantic to parts of the Gulf Coast on Thursday, with a probability of damaging wind gusts, heavy rain and brief tornadoes also taking occurring. Several flood warnings are in effect.

On Friday, strong to severe storms may continue along the cold front from northwest Georgia toward eastern Texas and Louisiana.

Four people died after a large tornado moved through northern Mississippi. The storm system then moved through the top of the state and into Tennessee. Two others were killed in Perry County, southwest of Nashville, and to others are missing. Another person died in Arkansas on Wednesday.

“The threat for severe thunderstorms may remain relatively concentrated for a few more hours over parts of Georgia and Alabama,” the National Weather Service forecast for Thursday. “A more marginal widely dispersed risk for severe storms exists from parts of the Mid-Atlantic region southwestward across the southern Appalachians to east Texas.”
