Australia orders Saab chaff and flare dispensers

LINKOPING, Sweden, Oct. 19 (UPI) — Saab reports that it is to produce additional high-capacity counter-measure dispensers for chaff and flares for Australia’s Air Force.

The BOL dispensers will be used on the service’s F/A-18A/B Hornets and will be delivered next year, the company said.

“The success of BOL continues, and we are proud to receive this order from the Royal Australian Air Force,” said Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab’s Electronic Warfare Systems, Saab. “It is a testament to the capability and reliability of the BOL.”

BOL is a chaff and flare dispenser operational on several fighter aircraft worldwide, including Saab’s Gripen, the Eurofighter Typhoon and Boeing’s F/A-18 Hornets. Australia acquired the system in 2008.

Australia’s F/A-18s can carry up to four BOLs. Each BOL carries 160 chaff/infra-red decoy packages.

Saab did not disclose the value of the contract not the number of BOL systems ordered.
