HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Author Jon Krakauer doesn’t like to make public appearances, so there will be no book tour to promote his latest work, “Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town.”
Instead, he plans to make one public appearance Wednesday night in Missoula. There, he’ll face angry critics who say his decision to focus on the small town is unfair.
Krakauer said Tuesday he wants to give people in the town the chance to confront him about the book.
“Missoula” ranks fourth on the New York Times’ hardcover nonfiction best-seller list. Krakauer uses the small Montana city to illustrate the problem faced by rape victims in convincing police and prosecutors to pursue their cases.
Krakauer says Missoula’s mishandling of rape reports seemed like the perfect example of a nationwide problem.
