NEATH PORT TALBOT , Wales, Nov. 6 (UPI) — For over a month, 4-year-old Mason Lewis was too afraid to get a haircut, until his barber came up with a solution that has since gone viral.
A Facebook post depicts Neath Port Talbot barber, James Williams, laying on the floor beside Lewis, finally able to give the child a complete haircut.
Lewis, who suffers from autism spectrum disorder (ASD), provided Williams with a challenge by running away every time he attempted to cut near one of his ears.
Lewis’s parents were referred to Williams based on his experience with children with similar conditions.
“I’ve dealt with children who have Autism, ASD and ADHD before. Mason’s parents came to my shop for a discussion and they started bringing Mason in every fortnight,” Williams told the South Wales Evening Post.
Photos depict Williams’ eventual breakthrough as was able to lay down next to Lewis and quietly cut his hair while the young boy was distracted by an iPhone.
“He loves the iPhone and I think that helped to distract him. He was watching a 16-second video on the news on repeat. I just starting cutting and kept cutting.” He said.
In the Facebook post, Williams thanked Lewis’s parents for the opportunity to cut his hair and expressed that the most rewarding part was the young boy’s reaction.
“What gave the finishing touch I asked for a high 5, he hugged me true barber love!” he wrote.
