DENVER, Jan. 22 (UPI) — The National Hockey League is expected to announce a pair of outdoor games — one for the Colorado Avalanche and one of the Minnesota Wild — to be added to to the to 2015-2016 season, in addition to the annually held Winter Classic.
“We’re hopeful of getting the game, and it’s trending in that direction,” Avalanche executive Joe Sakic told The Denver Post.
“Until it’s officially signed and announced by the league, I can’t really say much. It’s almost there, but it’s not there yet.”
The outdoor games are not expected to be part of the NHL’s New Year’s Day Winter Classic, as the NHL confirmed Tuesday that game would be between the Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins, with Bruins hosting at Foxbourough, Mass.
If held, the Avalanche’s addition to the NHL’s stadium series could be held at Sports Authority Field, home of the Denver Broncos, or Coors Field where the Colorado Rockies play. For the potential outdoor Wild game, the Twin Cities offers TCF Bank, home to both Minnesota Vikings and the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football, or Target Field, home of MLB’s Minnesota Twins.
The NHL has already announced the San Jose Sharks will play one outdoor game in San Francisco Bay Area in February.
