Avril Lavigne debuts new single at Special Olympics ceremony

LOS ANGELES, July 27 (UPI) — For the first time in over a year singer Avril Lavigne took the stage to perform on Saturday.

The “Girlfriend” singer debuted her new single, “Fly,” at the Special Olympics opening ceremony. The singer rocked a stunning black Alice + Olivia gown while donning jewelry by Le Vian.

Lavigne, who has been battling Lyme disease, posted a photo of her performance on Instagram saying she was “honored” to be there, saying, “This was a very beautiful night for me.”

She went on to thank those who supported her through her struggle and who also donated to her foundation. “I am so happy to have made it on stage tonight for the first performance in a year. Thank you for having me and please enjoy my song Fly,” she said.

Honored to have performed my song Fly at the opening ceremony for the Special Olympics tonight. All proceeds go to support the Special Olympics. This was a very beautiful night for me. Congratulations to all the athletes. Thank you to everyone who supports the Avril Lavigne Foundation. It has been a difficult year fighting through Lyme Disease for me and I am so happy to have made it on stage tonight for the first performance in a year. Thank you for having me and please enjoy my song Fly. I wrote this song to encourage people who are facing challenges, to encourage strength and to empower.
