Being home team can be blessing and curse for Lewisberry

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — Little League officials are expecting about 40,000 fans Saturday for the U.S. championship game between Pearland, Texas and Lewisberry, Pennsylvania, which is just a two-hour car ride from Williamsport.

Pearland lost 3-0 to undefeated Lewisberry on Wednesday, but beat Bonita, California 9-7 in extra innings Thursday night to earn a rematch with the Pennsylvania team. The winner will play the international champion, either undefeated Tokyo or Mexicali Baja California, Mexico on Sunday for the World Series title.

Texas player Ben Gottfried said during their first meeting with Pennsylvania that the crowd sounded a lot like his mother “when she’s mad.” He says the team expects a hostile environment again this weekend.

But Lewisberry catcher Kaden Peifer said it might be even harder for his team to play in front of such a large crowd, because everyone is expecting them to win.

A Pennsylvania team has not won the Little League World Series since Levittown in 1960.
