Berkeley Breathed returns to ‘Bloom County’ after 25 years

WASHINGTON, July 14 (UPI) — Renowned cartoonist Berkeley Breathed has officially revived his famous comic strip Bloom County after 25 years spent on other projects.

Published Monday onto his Facebook page, the first strip featured the beloved penguin, Opus, and his friend, Milo, as well as an updated title: Bloom County 2015.

“That was some nap!! How long was I out, Milo?” Opus asks, bewildered from his slumber.
“25 years,” Milo responds.

Breathed shared a teaser over the weekend in the form of a photo of himself in front of his computer, showing a blank comic panel. “A return after 25 years. Feels like going home,” he wrote.

Fans of the comic and its creator were overjoyed by the news, sharing notes of their excitement on Facebook.

“And suddenly the world is back in alignment,” read the comic’s most popular comment, written by a Ken Mist. “Thank you, sir.”

“We’ve been waiting so long!” said another reader, Susan Koester.

Bloom County earned Breathed a Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 1987. The author and cartoonist retired the strip two years later to pursue other projects, including comic strips Outland, which ended in 1995, and Opus, featuring Bloom’s star. He also published several children’s books including Mars Needs Moms!, A Wish for Wings That Work and Edwurd Fudwupper Fibbed Big.
