Bindi Irwin: “I’m kind of stepping away from khaki”

SYDNEY, June 17 (UPI) — Bindi Irwin says that although she’ll always be comfortable in Australia Zoo’s khaki uniform, she’s content experimenting with other styles.

The 16-year-old actress, who made her film debut in 2010’s Free Willy: Escape from Pirate’s Cove, spoke to US Weekly about coming into her own identity and sense of style while maintaining her love for her late father’s vision.

“I’m kind of stepping away from khaki,” the young conservationist and Netflix original host told the magazine. Earlier this month, Irwin made headlines when she posted a glam Instagram photo showing off her makeup, launching a worldwide conversation about how she has grown since her father, Steve Irwin’s death in 2006.

“I hope he’d be proud,” she said of her wishes that he’d approve of her projects, including her involvement in her family’s Wildlife Warriors organization and her Netflix original series Bindi’s Bootcamp. “That’s my end goal. He was like our living, breathing superhero. He was so passionate and clever.”

Here’s a #flashback to a 6 year old Bindi helping Dad and the croc boys secure a beautiful and giant salt water crocodile. In Far North Queensland, carrying my Dad’s knife belt, these were the best days. Please note two things about me – I was so little, the belt had no hope of fitting..so I had to carry it on my shoulder! Also, my epic star hat, because you have to have style when you’re catching crocs! A photo posted by Bindi Irwin (@bindisueirwin) on Jun 5, 2015 at 7:05am PDT
