Border collie named Tex wins Westminster dog agility contest

NEW YORK (AP) — A border collie named Tex has sped, jumped and climbed to a win at the Westminster Kennel Club agility contest.

Tex beat a field of 330 dogs to take the title Saturday. And a husky mix named Roo! repeated to earn a separate award for the highest-scoring mixed-breed dog.

Added just last year, agility is a fast-growing element of the nation’s premiere dog show. This year’s roster was up more than 45 percent from last year.

It spanned 74 breeds and varieties and included 15 mixed-breed hopefuls. They hadn’t had a place at Westminster for over 130 years until the agility competition began last year.

Dogs navigate an obstacle course of jumps, tunnels and ramps as cleanly and quickly as they can. Handlers use voice and body signals to guide them.
