WASHINGTON, Sept. 23 (UPI) — Former NBC Nightly News anchorman Brian Williams was mocked on Twitter Tuesday, after returning to television for live coverage of Pope Francis’ highly anticipated visit to the United States.
Viewers on Twitter would not let Williams live down the falsified stories he reported on when he was in Iraq and started the trending hashtag #BrianWilliamsPopeStories as a way to joke about potential fake pope stories the journalist could produce.
“I was once in line to be the next pope”- Brian Williams,” tweeted Krista Sepe.
“Did you know he was grazed by the very same bullet that struck Pope John Paul II in 1981 in Vatican Square?” wrote Edward J. Casey.
Other noteworthy tweets included, “In a private phone call I advised him to skip the red shoes,” by Winter and “The pope told me how impressed he was when I walked on water during Katrina,” posted by John Leonard.
Williams was suspended in February for six months without pay after NBC discovered that the anchor had lied and partially fabricated stories on his show on multiple occasions.
Pope Francis arrived in the United States Tuesday for the first official visit of his papacy. The pope is currently in Washington and will later visit New York and Philadelphia before returning to Rome on Sunday.
