LONDON (AP) — Cold War drama “Bridge of Spies” and lush lesbian romance “Carol” lead the race for the British Academy Film Awards, the U.K. equivalent of the Oscars.
Both films have nine nominations, including best picture. Survival saga “The Revenant” has eight.
Best-actor nominees are Eddie Redmayne for “The Danish Girl”; Bryan Cranston for “Trumbo”; Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Revenant”; Matt Damon for “The Martian”; and Michael Fassbender for “Steve Jobs.”
Best-actress contenders, announced Friday, are “The Danish Girl” star Alicia Vikander; Brie Larson for “Room”; Cate Blanchett for “Carol”; Maggie Smith for “The Lady in the Van”; and Saoirse Ronan for “Brooklyn.”
Winners of the British trophies, known as BAFTAs, will be announced at London’s Royal Opera House on Feb. 14, two weeks before Hollywood’s Academy Awards.
