LONDON, Aug. 5 (UPI) — Prominent British radical Islamist preacher Anjem Choudary was arrested Wednesday in London for promoting the Islamic State.
Choudary, 42, and an associate, Mohammed Mizanur Rahman, 32, were charged under Britain’s Terrorism Act of inviting “support for a proscribed terrorist organization known as ISIS,” the London Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
The Crown Prosecution Service said, “It is alleged that Anjem Choudary and Mohammed Rahman invited support for ISIS in individual lectures which were subsequently published online,” in a separate statement. Sue Hemming of the Prosecution Service said Choudary and Rahman are accused of generating “support for ISIS in individual lectures which were subsequently published online.”
Britain has initiated tough laws against terrorism in a strategy aimed at undercutting of IS recruitment in the country.
Choudary is well-known in Britain for inflammatory statements, including the recent blame of the United States for radicalizing the masked executioner seen in IS videos and known as “Jihadi John.” The two men are expected in court later Wednesday.
