BAKU, Azerbaijan (AP) — A British national working at the inaugural European Games was killed in a road crash in Baku.
The Briton, who has not been named, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by an Azerbaijani, who was also killed in the incident on Tuesday, police spokesman Ehsan Zahid said.
British embassy spokesperson Gunel Ahmedova told The Associated Press by telephone that the British individual had been employed by a company working on the ceremonies at the games.
Two more British nationals were hospitalized, and were receiving consular assistance, Ahmedova said on Wednesday.
European Games chief operating officer Simon Clegg confirmed thy were “aware of a road traffic accident,” but would not comment further, saying “details of the incident are still being determined.”
The incident took place on an avenue near accommodation for athletes, international media, and foreign games workers.
It is the second serious road incident at the games, which end on Sunday. On June 11, three Austrian swimmers were struck by a bus in the athletes’ village, leaving one, 15-year-old Vanessa Sahinovic, with severe spinal injuries.
