BRASSIDE, England, Sept. 10 (UPI) — A British tortoise sprinted his way into the Guinness Book of World Records by setting a new land speed record for his species: 0.62 mph.
Bertie, a tortoise living at the Adventure Valley theme park in Brasside, England, was awarded the title of world’s fastest tortoise by Guinness after he completed an 18-foot course with a time of 19.53 seconds, reaching a speed of 0.92 feet per second, or 0.62 mph.
Owners Marco and Janine Calzini said they knew they had a speedy tortoise on their hands when they found out the previous record of 0.41 feet per second, which was set by another British tortoise named Charlie in 1977.
“I used to collect the Guinness World Records books — my first was the 1980 edition — and I fondly remember seeing them all in the shops. To be in the book is a dream come true, a massive achievement!” Marco Calzini said.
