CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Malcolm Brogdon scored 16 points, and No. 2 Virginia took command with a 29-6 run to start the second half of a 65-42 victory against Clemson on Tuesday night.
Justin Anderson added 15 points for the Cavaliers (16-0, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who won their 20th consecutive game at John Paul Jones Arena. The win, with former Virginia great and three-time national player of the year Ralph Sampson in attendance, gave Virginia it first 4-0 start in conference play since the 1994-95 season.
Jaron Blossomgame scored nine points to lead the Tigers (9-7, 1-3). Clemson closed to 25-19 at halftime, but didn’t score for the first five minutes thereafter as Virginia expanded its lead to 34-19.
With the score at 40-25, a three-point play by Darion Atkins and a 3-pointer by Brogdon stared a 16-0 burst to finish the run, making it 54-25, and coach Tony Bennett began substituting liberally.
Anderson hit two 3-pointers late in the first half to give the Cavaliers the halftime cushion. The first gave the Cavaliers a 22-17 lead, and the second made it 25-19 with 48 seconds left.
Virginia, which leads the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 51.1 points per game, held the Tigers scoreless for nearly 5 1/2 minutes during the big second-half run. The Cavaliers also held the Tigers scoreless for a 6:50 stretch in the first half but had their own drought of 4:40.
