Los Angeles (AFP) – The Denver Broncos’ Australian defensive end Adam Gotsis was arrested last week in connection with a 2013 rape allegation, the NFL team confirmed on Monday.

Gotsis, 25, surrendered for questioning last Wednesday  at Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, Georgia, after the allegation was made.

The Denver Post reported that Gotsis was released after paying a $50,000 bond.

He is accused of raping a woman while he was a student at Georgia Tech five years ago. His alleged victim reported the incident to police on February 1.

“We were recently informed of an investigation into an alleged incident involving Adam Gotsis that occurred in 2013 when he was in college,” the Broncos said in a statement.

“Our organization was aware of his arrest on March 7 and it is our understanding that no determination has been made at this time as to whether any charges will be filed.

“The Broncos take an accusation of this nature very seriously and will continue to closely monitor the legal proceedings.”

The Broncos picked the Melbourne-born Gotsis in the second-round of the 2016 draft. After an injury-hit season in 2016, Gotsis played all all 16 regular season games in 2017, making 41 tackles and two sacks.
