Burundi: 8 killed in coordinated attacks of military camps

BUJUMBURA, Burundi (AP) — Soldiers in Burundi’s army say that eight people died in overnight attacks by an unknown group on two military camps in the capital.

A soldier said Friday that five attackers and two soldiers were killed in the assault by people in civilian clothing at 4 a.m. Two attackers were reportedly captured. Another soldier at the military college of ISCAM said one soldier died in an attack by unknown men. Both insisted on anonymity because they are not authorized to speak with the media.

President Pierre Nkurunziza won elections in July for a third term in office that opponents say is illegal. At least 240 people have been killed in protests and assassinations since April when Nkurunziza’s candidacy was announced.
