Bust of Dick Cheney unveiled at U.S. Capitol

WASHINGTON, Dec. 3 (UPI) — A bust of former Vice President Dick Cheney has been unveiled in the U.S. Capitol.

At the ceremony Thursday afternoon, former President George W. Bush told the audience:
“I must confess I’m somewhat reluctant to come back to Washington. The last time I showed up here I was hanged in the White House,” Bush joked, referring to his official portrait. “This time I’ve returned only to find my vice president getting busted in the Capitol.”

The Senate side of the Capitol houses a bust of every vice president, except current veep Joe Biden, and Cheney’s predecessor, Al Gore.

According to the U.S Senate, Gore’s bust has not been completed yet. Joe Biden’s bust has yet to be commissioned, according to the Architect of the Capitol.

The tradition of decorating the Senate building with the busts of vice presidents, who also serve as presidents of the Senate, dates back to the 1800s.

Bush highlighted the accomplishments of his former second-in-command, who served as the nation’s 46th vice president.

“For eight years, Dick stood by my side and always did what was right for our nation. I could not ask for a better vice president than Dick Cheney,” Bush said. “He’s a good man who loves his country and really loves his family.”

CNN reports Cheney’s wife Lynn, along with their grandchildren, did the honor of unveiling the statue.

“Being cast in marble is something that every vice president looks forward to,” said Cheney. “It’s not only a high honor, it’s our one shot at being remembered.”
