BANGUI, Central African Republic (AP) — A rebel leader in Central African Republic has proclaimed an autonomous state in the north of the country after threatening violence against those in the area who voted on a constitutional referendum meant to usher in some stability.
Cmdr. Maouloud Moussa, a spokesman for Muslim rebel leader Noureddine Adam, said Tuesday that the new state will be called the Republic of Logone. He said a copy of the declaration, signed Monday, was given to the U.N. office in Kaga-Bandoro.
The transitional government denounced the declaration.
Adam’s statement says the country should be divided in a move to ensure peace. His call comes weeks before a national election is scheduled and two weeks after Pope Francis visited and called for reconciliation among the country’s Muslim and Christian militias.
Central African Republic has been highly volatile since early 2013.
