NEW YORK, Oct. 29 (UPI) — Caitlyn Jenner has been named one of Glamour magazine’s Women of the Year due to her coming out as transgender and speaking on the social issues affecting the LGBT community.
The 66-year-old reality television star said after she transitioned earlier this year, she started believing, “Maybe this is why God put me on earth,” because of the influential platform from which she could speak. “This issue has been swept under the rug for so long. I need to tell this story on the highest level you can possibly do it,” she said. “Not just for me but for this entire community.”
GLAAD chair member Jennifer Finney Boylan commends Jenner’s actions this year, saying her story has prompted the opening up of “thousands and thousands” of others who share similar sentiments about their gender identities. “My mother used to say, ‘It’s impossible to hate anyone whose story you know,’” Boylan said.
“I’m excited about the future for the first time in a long, long time,” Jenner said. “And that is a nice feeling to have…To be honest with you, if the worst thing in the world that happens to you is you are trans, you’ve got it made.”
Jenner’s reality show I Am Cait was recently approved for a second season thanks to its success on E! and exposure it has given the transgender community. In a statement released earlier this month, Jenner is quoted as saying, “I’m looking forward to continuing the conversation.”
