Caitlyn Jenner’s 1984 Olympic trophy up for grabs

CHICAGO, July 30 (UPI) — The Olympic torch held by Caitlyn Jenner (then Bruce) in Lake Tahoe, Nevada during decathlon in 1984 will be up for auction Thursday.

The 24-in. torch is the first piece of memorabilia being sold from Jenner’s former days as an Olympic athlete following the gold medalist’s revelation that she is transgender.

Jenner had been approached by a hotel named Caesars Tahoe to carry the torch as a part of the hotel’s agenda of giving back to the community and supporting local youth programs. The hotel initiated a drawing that gave winners the opportunity to carry the torch along a 31-mile route. 49 of 50 opportunities were awarded to individuals and organizations, and the last went to Jenner.

Now, the torch will be placed will be auctioned off for more than $20,000 at the Platinum Night Sports event at Heritage Auctions in Chicago. It is being sold by Bob Lorsch, who recruited Jenner to complete the last 1,000-meter stretch of the torch relay.

Jenner had previously won an Olympic gold medal in 1976 in the decathlon. A 1984 interview revealed that despite disliking running, Jenner participate din the Olympics because of her impression with how the city of Los Angeles had handled the event.
