California businessman presumed dead after single-engine plane crash

OAKLAND, Calif., Dec. 23 (UPI) — A California businessman was presumed dead after his single-engine aircraft crashed in a rural locale near the San Francisco Bay area.

John J. Sacco, a well-known businessman who was recently appointed to the California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board, owned the aircraft that went down Tuesday and was likely the lone occupant, multiple media sources reported. Local officials have not confirmed the pilot’s identity.

Aisha Knowles, spokeswoman for the Alameda County Fire Department, said the pilot radioed Oakland International Airport air traffic control the plane was experiencing engine problems. The aircraft was discovered about 4 p.m. in a wooded area, about 12 miles east of the airport.

The area where the plane was ultimately discovered made the search and recovery effort difficult. Two firefighters were treated for minor injuries.
