Carrie Brownstein, Amy Poehler lead spontaneous wedding at book tour event

PASADENA, Calif., Nov. 4 (UPI) — Carrie Brownstein officiated a spontaneous wedding during an event for her new memoir Hunger Makes Me A Modern Girl Tuesday night.

The Portlandia star and licensed officiant agreed to conduct the nuptials, which were recorded and posted to YouTube Wednesday, while comedian Amy Poehler played piano to a giddy audience. The event took place at Central Presbyterian Church in Pasadena, Calif.

The newly married couple, consisting of Kendall Oshiro and Genevieve Hernandez, shared their love with a room full of strangers during an intended reading of Hunger Makes Me A Modern Girl. Brownstein, partially prepared for the surprise event due to a pre-planned wedding she was asked to officiate, said a few words of encouragement.

“In the way that we always root for ourselves, in the way that we root for love to always win out of despair, for hope to win out of fear, all of us here are rooting for you,” she said to the couple. “With the power vested in me by the state of California, I now pronounce you married.”

A witness told Us Weekly the couple arrived to Brownstein’s book reading event prepared with their marriage license after hearing she was an ordained minister.

“Amy was visibly excited and shocked, and turned to Carrie [and said] ‘You gotta do it!” the source said. “The crowd cheered and applauded wildly.”
