Carson rolls out healthcare policy

WASHINGTON, Dec. 10 (UPI) — With foreign policy the recent focus of the presidential race, Ben Carson attempted to change the conversation by releasing his healthcare policy.

Carson announced his proposal at an event in Michigan on Wednesday. The 10-page plan would end the Affordable Care Act and increase the Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 70. It would also make key changes to Medicaid — for example, giving recipients access to private health insurance.

Carson also proposes “Health Empowerment Accounts,” which would be assigned to U.S. citizens at birth and could be transferred across jobs and states.

The plan is heavy on criticism of the Affordable Care Act — as well as photos of Carson from his days as a neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins. There is no fiscal component to the plan outlining the expected cost of his program or projected savings.

The recent debates on foreign policy and national security have weakened Carson, who has admitted he is lacking in that area. NBC reported Carson has dropped in several recent polls.

In an effort to bolster his foreign policy portfolio, Carson recently visited Syrian refugee camps in Jordan and plans a trip to Kenya, Nigeria and Zambia shortly after Christmas.
