Chevrolet Camaro named Motor Trend Car of the Year

DETROIT, Nov. 17 (UPI) — Motor Trend magazine gave top honors to two General Motors vehicles, naming the Chevrolet Camaro its Car of the Year and the Chevrolet Colorado its Truck of the Year.

The Volvo XC90, meanwhile, won SUV of the Year.

The competition lasted four days and included 26 cars, which judges drove for hundreds of miles before selecting winners.

Motor Trend’s staff eventually chose the Camaro from a lineup of seven finalists, including the Audi TT, BMW 7 Series, Honda Civic, Mazda MX-5 Miata, Mercedes-Benz GT S and Toyota Mirai.

CNN quoted Edward Loh, editor-in-chief of Motor Trend, as saying the Camaro “is one of the finest driving vehicles in the world at any price, though its price is well within reach of the average consumer.”

Judges praised the Camaro’s lighter design and “very nimble appearance.” The 2016 model comes with three engine choices: a 275-horsepower turbo four-cylinder from $27,000, a 335-horsepower V6 for $28,500, and a 455-horsepower V8 for $37,000.

According to Motor Trend, Chrevrolet sells more than 80,000 Camaros a year.

USA Today reported 70,291 Chevrolet Colorados were sold during the first 10 months of the year, making the truck its eighth most popular model. The latest version has a four-cylinder diesel engine that gets 31 miles a gallon.

Other finalists for Truck of the Year included the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Canyon, GMC Sierra 1500, Nissan Titan XD and Toyota Tacoma.

The Volvo XC90 was noted for its new design as well as its supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces more than 300 horsepower. Finalists in the SUV category included the Honda Pilot, Lincoln MKX, Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class and Nissan Murano.
