Chicago City Council to vote on property tax hike

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago’s City Council is expected to take up a proposed budget that includes a massive property hike and other fees to help close a shortfall and address its underfunded pension system.

The council is expected to take a vote Wednesday on the proposed $7.8 billion budget.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel has proposed an incremental $543 million property tax increase for police and fire pensions. He’s also asked for a separate $45 million property tax hike for schools, a $9.50 per household garbage collection charge and other fees.

Emanuel has said his plan is a step toward righting bad financial practices of the past, including questionable borrowing. Chicago has the worst-funded pension system of any major U.S. city and a budget shortfall.

He’s also seeking an exemption that would need legislative approval.
