CHICAGO, Nov. 9 (UPI) — Over 200 dignitaries and corporate leaders gathered in Chicago to celebrate state and federal law enforcement at Chicago Crime Commission’s Stars of Distinction Awards Dinner. Amongst those honored was a 2-year-old yellow labrador retriever named Mitchell.
Mitchell received the “Paws of Distinction Award” for his service as a “comfort” dog at the Lake County State’s Attourney’s Office.
Mitchell was donated to the Lake County State’s Attourney’s Office in April 2015 by Support Dogs Inc. and has since made appearances in drug court and veterans court to assist defendants dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse issues, according to the Chicago Tribune.
He also works with child victims of sexual and physical abuse, as officials say his presence makes them more comfortable during police interviews.
Mitchell began a series of training as a puppy after being selected to be a service dog based on a number of factors including his temperament. He trained with the Southwestern Illinois Correctional Center before graduating and being assigned to his handlers Jason Grindel and James Magna, who were also honored at the ceremony.
The Chicago Tribune quotes a statement by the State’s Attorney Michael Nerheim, praising Mitchell and congratulating him and his handlers on their award.
“He has been a wonderful addition to the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office family and he is loved by many. He was also a huge hit at the ceremony.”
