SYDNEY, Dec. 2 (UPI) — Chris Brown will not follow through with a set of tour dates in Australia and New Zealand in December.
Promoters announced Tuesday Brown’s concerts in both countries have been canceled due to unspecified reasons.
“Mr. Brown and the promoters both remain positive that the tour will take place in the near future,” a statement issued through Ticketek Australia said. “Mr. Brown wishes to express his deepest gratitude to the fans for their support and looks forward to a successful tour in the near future.”
The shows were planned for Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane between Dec. 9-16. Full refunds are being issued to fans.
Although what prompted the cancellation was not discussed in the statement, Brown faced pushback earlier this year when attempting to obtain work visas due to his past domestic violence conviction, BBC reports. The Australian government announced plans to deny Brown’s visa request in September based on his criminal past.
The singer pleaded guilty to assaulting singer Rihanna in 2009.
Brown has toured Australia twice since the conviction, but some citizens have reportedly taken action to influence the government to “take a stand” on the issue of domestic violence. American boxer Floyd Mayweather reportedly experienced similar refusals by the countries earlier this year.
