OAKLAND, Calif., Sept. 14 (UPI) — The man formerly known as Pacman is expected to be fined after a post-tackle scrum with a rookie.
Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam Jones was locked into a block with Oakland Raiders wide receiver Amari Cooper in the second quarter. When Raiders fullback Jamize Olawale had a 60-yard run in the quarter, Jones fell on top of Cooper, forcing Cooper’s helmet to come off. Jones then pushes Cooper’s head down onto his helmet.
After the game, a 33-13 Bengals win, Cooper said he doesn’t think Jones should be suspended.
“I was just trying to block him, and he ended up on top of me and that happened,” Cooper told CSN Bay Area. “That’s it.”
“I honestly didn’t – I just saw it – I didn’t know my head hit the helmet,” Cooper said. “But it’s football. You have to expect physical play. … I don’t think he should be suspended. It was just physical. I should have been playing physical.”
Jones excused the event, explaining that he was “playing football.”
“Whatever you seen, that’s what happened,” Jones told Cincinnati.com. “I’m not going to get into all that. I’m here to play football. I don’t back done from nobody and I ain’t out trying to start nothing. I’m just out playing football.”
“There, I was ‘in the moment’ in that play,” Jones said. “Like I said, we’re just out playing football. I’m not out to do that. I don’t want to hurt my team by no form or fashion but I’ve got to make sure I protect myself.”
Jones drew a flag for unnecessary roughness, but so did Raiders offensive lineman Austin Howard, so the penalties offset.
Mike Pereira, the NFL’s former vice president of officiating, said after the game that Jones should have been ejected.
Pro Football Talk learned, through a league source, that Jones will “avoid suspension.”
