Search for skier missing in Scottish avalanche

Rescue teams were searching on Sunday for an experienced skier swept away in a powerful avalanche in the Scottish Highlands.

The man, who has not been named, was in an off-piste area near Glencoe Ski Centre when the avalanche hit at about 1pm on Saturday, taking the man with it as it travelled about 1,000 feet down the slope.

No trace of him has been found so far, and rescuers said they feared for his life in the hazardous area.

“It’s not like a normal ski slope where it is mainly smooth and straight. There are a lot of rocks around and it is more dangerous,” said John Grieve, leader of Glencoe Mountain Team.

About 30 people from the Glencoe and Lochaber mountain rescue teams, plus police, a ski patrol and RAF helicopter were taking part in the Easter day search.

“The avalanche has actually gone into a gully, and in some places the snow is about 40ft deep,” added Grieve.

“Our guys have been out digging deep trenches and probing from there, as our poles are obviously not long enough to do it from the surface of the snow.

“The missing man is an extremely experienced skier… we will continue looking until we find him.”

A friend who was with the man during the avalanche is not thought to have been hurt.

A series of accidents have taken place in the Scottish mountains in recent months.

On March 9 the body of a man was found in Glencoe after a climber went missing, and in January four people died in an avalanche in the same area.
