Connecticut University forces landlords to live with their residents

HAMDEN, Conn., Dec. 9 (UPI) — A zoning commission installed a new regulation to cut down on partying in off-campus housing at Connecticut’s Quinnipiac University.

The Hamden Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved a regulation that will force landlords to live with their students in the off-campus housing locations that they rent.

Landlords applying for student housing permits will be forced to live with their tenants for 10 months.

The regulation came to pass after a number of homeowners in the area complained about being kept up all night by student parties.

“This has been a long time that we’ve had to wait for this,” said Hamden resident Cindy Civetello. “Years that we’ve had to go through rowdy parties because of absentee landlords.”

Fellow residents Jill and Frank Martone have described living in the area near the university as “chaos” to the New Haven Register.

“The noise is unbelievable,” said Jill. “They are drinking and driving, texting and driving — they have urinated and vomited on our lawn.”

Despite these comments, Quinnipiac students believe that these actions only describe a small selection of students.

“I feel like the town of Hamden paints a very negative picture but, it’s really just a small percentage of kids who are the ones who are acting up and misbehaving,” said student Steve Albano.

The regulation only applies to new permits, while landlords with existing permits will be grandfathered in.
