Construction crew heads up Hawaii mountain to telescope site

HONOLULU (AP) — Workers are trying to make their way up a Hawaii mountain to restart construction of a giant telescope that many people oppose.

A Thirty Meter Telescope spokeswoman said Wednesday morning the crew is on its way.

Protest leader Kahookahi (cah-HO’-oh-cah-hee) Kanuha (cah-NU’-hah) says hundreds of people are blocking the crew’s vehicles at 9,200-feet elevation the Big Island’s Mauna Kea.

Kanuha estimates there are more than 400 protesters there. He says the group will eventually let the trucks pass, but another group will block them again higher up.

He says they’ll peacefully prevent construction from resuming.

Opposition has been mounting against building what would be one of the world’s largest telescopes on land held sacred by many Native Hawaiians.

Construction was halted for about two months after 31 people were arrested for blocking the site.
