NEW YORK, June 10 (UPI) — ESPN was on the wrong end of a {link:Bob Costas: “http://www.upi.com/News_Photos/view/26bc7553db1c27f28ac1c2c97244dc5d/?ilink=1″,nw, t: “Cincinnati Reds vs St. Louis Cardinals”} word blast Tuesday on the Dan Patrick Show.
Costas spoke with Patrick and did not hold back when it came to the subject of Caitlyn Jenner winning the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPN ESPY awards. He called the network’s decision to give Jenner the award a “crass exploitation play.”
“That’s not to say it doesn’t take some measure of personal courage to do what Caitlyn Jenner has done,” {link:Costas told Patrick: “http://www.tmz.com/2015/06/10/bob-costas-rips-espn-caitlyn-jenner-espy-is-crass-exploitation-play/”,nw, t: “Bob Costas on Dan Patrick Show”}. “I think every year we look across the landscape of sports and we find prominent people and kids in high school and amateur athletes who I think more closely fit the description of what they’re looking for…or should be looking for there. I think this is just a play to pump up audience, the way lots of things are put on television to attract eyeballs — not because of the validity but because of whatever the kind of gawker factor is.”
Bruce Jenner went public with his new identity and new name on June 1. Caitlyn Jenner debuted on the cover of Vanity Fair.
The E! network will air the the {link:new TV docu-series: “http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/tv/la-et-st-caitlyn-jenner-tv-show-titled-i-am-cait-20150603-story.html”,nw, t: “E! Network new show”} “I Am Cait” starting July 26.
