CANNES, France, May 12 (UPI) — Actress-musician Courtney Love and actress Joey King are to lead the cast of The Possibility of Fireflies, a coming-of-age story set in the summer of 1989 in suburban Maryland.

Deborah Chow is directing the adaptation from a screenplay written by Dominique Paul, author of the original novel.

The film follows “Ellie Roma — a precocious teenager with dreams of becoming a writer — who must cope with her chaotic, self-destructive mother Susanna and a volatile, metal-head sister, Gwen,” a press release said. “When Ellie falls in love with her older neighbor, aspiring singer Leo, she finds herself caught in the alluring undertow of a reckless rock ‘n’ roll freedom, and must make a decision that will change her life forever.”

“We’re so thrilled to secure such an incredibly talented duo in Joey King and Courtney Love to lead this cast,” Chow said in a statement. “Joey has proven herself to be one of the most talented, young actresses working today, and as an iconic rock musician, who is also a versatile and fearless actress, Courtney is the perfect fit for this music-infused story.”

Love is known for her performances in The People Vs. Larry Flynt, Sid and Nancy, Man on the Moon and Basquiat. The wife of late Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain and the mother of Frances Bean Cobain, Love has been candid about her longtime battle with substance abuse.

King has appeared in Ramona and Beezus, White House Down and Wish You Were Here.
