VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Dec. 9 (UPI) — A British Columbia man offering a $4.5 million “home for sale” said the property — a 1-foot-by-9-inch gingerbread house — is slated for “demolition” Jan. 1.
Vancouver resident Ari Ron, who posted a Craigslist ad asking $4.5 million for the “investor’s dream,” said the posting is meant to satirize the area’s real estate market.
“Vancouver gingerbread home for sale, lot value only, 1’X9″ in size, $4.5 million,” Ron wrote. “Will be demolished January 1, investor’s dream, baking sheet not included.”
“It looks like a typical, old character home on a small lot, which is basically what developers are collecting right now for redevelopment for condo sites, and they’re paying like $4.5 million per property,” Ron told Metro News.
Ron, whose ad was marked “serious buyers only,” said he has received a lot of positive feedback on his post.
“People are struggling. Even if you make half a million dollars a year, it doesn’t mean you’re getting a mortgage. A lot of people can’t get mortgages, so a lot of people are renting or have roommates,” he said.
The resident said he was shocked when he went home-hunting on the city’s West End and discovered the prices.
“They’re like $2,000 [a month] for like 650 square feet. I mean, this isn’t New York or Tokyo,” he said.
Ron said he has a backup plan if no one is willing to pay $4.5 million for the gingerbread house — he set up a GoFundMe page supporting the British Columbia Children’s Hospital and has pledged to bequeath his delicious residence to the largest donor.
