MECCA, Saudi Arabia, Sept. 11 (UPI) — A crane collapsed Friday through the roof of the Grand Mosque at Mecca, Saudi Arabia, killing 62 people visiting the site as part of an annual pilgrimage.
Saudi Arabia’s directorate general of Saudi civil defense reported at least 62 deaths and about 30 injuries.
The department said health and other emergency officials were en route to the site to assist.
The cause of the crash hadn’t been determined, though Al Arabiya reported strong winds in the area.
Millions of Muslims travel to Mecca each year during Hajj, which this year falls Sept. 21-26. Many worshippers were already in the city to visit the Grand Mosque for the pilgrimage.
This is a developing story.
