Creator of ‘Stampede’ comic strip announces retirement

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — The creator of the “Stampede” comic strip says he’s retiring and will stop producing new cartoons on Jan. 1, 2016.

Jerry Palen cites health and wanting to spend more time with family.

The 73-year-old Palen lives in the small south-central Wyoming town of Saratoga.

The Casper Star-Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1Tu8LMu) that he has been producing the comic strip that features a lovable agricultural couple named Flo and Elmo since 1973.

“Stampede” became a weekly syndicated cartoon feature in both the United States and Canada, reaching an audience of more than 2 million readers via newspapers and magazines.

Palen says he will continue making the popular “Stampede” calendar.
