DES MOINES, Iowa, Dec. 10 (UPI) — Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) picked up a key Iowa endorsement, strengthening his chances in the upcoming Iowa caucus.
Iowa evangelical leader Bob Vander Plaats endorsed Cruz in a press conference Wednesday. Vander Plaats is the CEO of The Family Leader, a conservative organization. The Hill reported he has endorsed the last two winners of the Iowa Caucus: Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa. However, this time around, Vander Plaats passed both of them up to offer his support to Cruz.
“At the end of the day, we truly believe that Ted Cruz is the most consistent and principled conservative who has the ability to not only win Iowa but I believe to win the (Republican) nomination,” Vander Plaats told the Des Moines Register on Wednesday.
On Monday, a Monmouth University poll showed Cruz leading in Iowa. At 24 percent, Cruz bumped Ben Carson out of the top spot. Carson led the Monmouth poll two months ago before plummeting 19 percentage points.
