Wall Street greeted a second Obama term the way it greeted the first.

Investors dumped stocks Wednesday in the sharpest sell-off of the year. With the election only hours behind them, they focused on big problems ahead in Washington and across the Atlantic Ocean.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 312.95 points, or 2.4 percent, at 12,932.73.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 33.86 points, or 2.4 percent, to 1,394.53.

The Nasdaq composite index lost 74.64 points, or 2.5 percent, to 2,937.29.

For the week:

The Dow is down 160.43, or 1.2 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 19.67, or 1.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 44.84, or 1.5 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 715.17, or 5.9 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 136.93, or 10.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 332.14, or 12.8 percent.
