LOS ANGELES, Dec. 30 (UPI) — Following the massive success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, star Daisy Ridley will be taking a break from lightsabers and stormtroopers with her next film, Studio Ghibli’s Only Yesterday.
Ridley will be voicing lead character Taeko in the animated classic which is finally getting a North American release after enchanting audiences in Japan 25 years ago.
Set in the early 1980s, Only Yesterday follows 27-year-old Taeko as she visits family outside of Tokyo and begins to reminiscence about her upbringing including her first feelings of romance and dealing with the onset of adolescence.
As Taeko meets a young farmer, Toshio, voiced by Dev Patel, she begins to wonder if she has remained true to the girl she used to be.
For Ridley, the role is exciting due to Studio Ghibli’s “fantastical” pedigree and relatable stories. “The human stories are so human,” she says speaking with Entertainment Weekly. “I think the reason probably this is such a loved film and will continue to be so is because it doesn’t feel foreign.”
Only Yesterday will open Jan. 1 in New York at the IFC Center before expanding to more cities in February.
