NONTHABURI, Thailand, Sept. 8 (UPI) — Experts said a daylight fireball in recovered over Thailand by a motorist’s dashboard camera may have been space junk falling to Earth.
Porjai Jaturongkhakun posted a video to YouTube that shows a fireball streaking downward in the sky at 8:41 a.m. Monday in Nonthaburi and the YouTuber suggested the object could be a shooting star, or meteor.
The Bangkok Planetarium said no meteorites were recovered Monday in the area where the video was shot, but there were numerous other reports confirming the fireball.
A planetarium official suggested the object may have been a burning balloon rather than a meteor, but website satview.org suggested the meteor sightings were a result of space junk falling to Earth and burning in the atmosphere.
The website said space junk Flock 1B-11 object number 40459U was due to hit the atmosphere about the same time as the video and reported sightings.
Saran Poshyachina, the deputy director of the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand, said the fireball could be a meteoroid or space junk.
