Milan (AFP) – Italy midfielder Daniele De Rossi will be honoured by UEFA on Thursday in recognition of having passed the 100-cap mark with the Azzurri.

Italy host Spain in a 2018 World Cup qualifier in Turin in what will be the first meeting between the sides since Spain lost 2-0 in the last 16 of Euro 2016 at the Stade de France in June.

De Rossi is set to line up in central midfield at Juventus Stadium, where he will be honoured by European football’s governing body prior to claiming his 108th Italy cap.

“UEFA will award a prize to Daniele De Rossi prior to kick off in the 2018 World Cup qualifier between Italy and Spain at Juventus Stadium,” said a statement by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).

De Rossi collected his 107th cap for Italy in a 3-1 friendly defeat to France last month.

The 33-year-old has competed in three editions of the World Cup (2006, 2010, 2014), three European Championships (2008, 2012, 2016) and two Confederations Cups.

Italy’s record cap-holder is goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who will make his 164th Italy appearance at his club ground of Juventus Stadium on Thursday.
