Diamondbacks’ David Peralta homers off of outfielder’s glove

June 13 (UPI) — Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder David Peralta’s 12th home run of the season came in a peculiar fashion.

At first it was in the webbing of an outfielder’s glove and then it was over the left field fence. The Diamondbacks ended up losing the bout 5-4 to the Pittsburgh Pirates Wednesday at Chase Field in Phoenix.

The oddity occurred in the bottom of the first inning. Pirates starter Jameson Taillon began the game by allowing a leadoff single to Jon Jay. Paul Goldschmidt and Jake Lamb both were put out with fly balls before Peralta stepped into the box.

Taillon worked quickly against the left-handed hitter. He earned a called strike before Peralta fouled off his second offering. Taillon then threw in a 95.2-mph fastball.

Peralta pummeled the pitch to left field, but it didn’t have enough distance to get over the wall, until Pirates left fielder Austin Meadows came in for the assist. Meadows eyed the ball as it descended back to the field. He stabbed up with his gloved right hand and attempted to bring the baseball down for the final out of the inning.

But when he opened up his glove, it was empty. Meadows looked back up to the stands in disbelief, as the ball had somehow bounced off of the webbing of the leather and over the wall for a two-run shot.

Peralta was 1-for-4, with two RBIs and a run scored in the loss. Meadows went 0-for-4 at the plate for the Pirates.
