Los Angeles (AFP) – Former Boston Red Sox general manager Mike Hazen has been hired by the Arizona Diamondbacks as executive vice president in a bid to boost the struggling Major League Baseball club.
The Diamondbacks won their only World Series title 15 years ago but have not reached the playoffs or managed a winning season since 2011 and have won only one of four playoff series since taking the crown.
Hazen will be charged with assembling talent after seeing Dave Dombrowski, the Red Sox president of player operations, make the player decisions in Boston.
“We feel very strongly that we have found the ideal candidate to lead our baseball operations,” Arizona managing general partner Ken Kendrick said.
Hazen had been with the Red Sox since 2006 and was on the staff of Boston’s 2007 and 2013 World Series champions.
“Mike’s reputation throughout the game is impeccable and his championship experience gives us great confidence in naming him to this position,” Kendrick said.
Hazen, 40, replaced Dave Stewart, who was fired by Arizona along with manager Chip Hale earlier this month after a 69-93 season.
