MONTREAL, Jan. 6 (UPI) — Reports that Montreal Impact forward Didier Drogba plans to retire appeared premature Wednesday.
Drogba tweeted at 5 p.m.: “Lovely to receive these messages but I have not yet announced my retirement & am still in discussion with @impactmontreal about my future.”
An early report from L’Equipe claimed Drogba told Joey Saputo, investor and operator of the Impact, about wanting to return to his former team Chelsea. The report stated that Drogba wants to join Guus Hiddink’s coaching staff.
Drogba, 37, scored 12 goals and had one assists in 12 games this season for Montreal. In 2014, Drogba scored seven times and had two assists in 15 starts for Chelsea and the Ivory Coast.
