Disney to launch direct streaming service in U.K.

LONDON, Oct. 22 (UPI) — Disney will launch Disney Life, a direct streaming service for its classic television shows, movies and other media, in the United Kingdom next month.

The subscription-based service, similar to Netflix, will cost $15 a month and provide users with access to not only Disney and Pixar films and TV shows, but books and music as well. Productions under the Lucasfilm Star Wars and Marvel brands, however, will be exempt from the new service for now.

The Financial Times reports Disney’s new service will move beyond the United Kingdom by next year, opening access to French, Spanish, Italian and German consumers. “This is the future, in many respects,” CEO Bob Iger said in a statement.

“We’re seeing more and more opportunities to reach consumers directly and not through middlemen, and we’re seeing consumers wanting product in different ways.”

There is no immediate plans for Disney Life to make its way across the ocean to the United States due to an already large set of agreements with cable and satellite brands. However, eventually, Iger says, the service may make its way into U.S. homes.
