NEW YORK, Dec. 9 (UPI) — President-elect Donald Trump could be turning to Major League Baseball when looking for new hires.
Former MLB manager Bobby Valentine is “on a short-list of candidates for the job of United States Ambassador to Japan,” according to a WEEI report.
Valentine, 66, managed Japan’s Chiba Lotte Marines for seven seasons. He owns a 581-605 record in 16 years as a MLB manager for the Texas Rangers, Mets, and Boston Red Sox. In 2012, Valentine led the Red Sox to a 69-93 mark.
Valentine now serves as the athletic director at Sacred Heart University. This isn’t the first time Trump has turned to sports when eyeing candidates for his transition team. On Wednesday, he named former World Wresting Entertainment [WWE] CEO Linda McMahon the administrator of the Small Business Administration.
Valentine was the first American-born manager to win the Japan Series when he won it in 2005 with the Marines.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Valentine each attended the University of Southern California.
