Dylann Roof transferred to death row in Indiana

April 23 (UPI) — Dylann Roof has been transferred to death row in Indiana, according to prison records. Roof was convicted in federal court for carrying out a mass church shooting in South Carolina in 2015

Roof, 23, is being housed at the United States Penitentiary in Terre Haute, where federal death row inmates are incarcerated and executed, according to Federal Bureau of Prisons records.

On Friday afternoon, the U.S. Marshals Service took custody of Roof from the Al Cannon Detention Center in North Charleston, where he has been held since his arrest. Roof was convicted of killing nine black worshipers on June 17, 2015, during Bible study at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston.

On April 10, Roof pleaded guilty to nine counts of murder in state court and received life sentences without parole. This allowed federal authorities to take him into custody.

A federal jury convicted Roof on 33 federal charges, including hate crimes, in December and sentenced him to death in January.

Roof is the 63rd inmate awaiting execution on federal death row — the first one on a federal hate crime. The last federal execution was in 2003 — the third person to be put to death since the death penalty was restored in 1988. In 1972, the U.S. Supreme Court suspended the federal death penalty.

Louis Jones Jr. was executed in Terre Haute by lethal injection in 2003. Drug trafficker Raul Garz and Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh were executed in 2001.

Terre Haute, a medium-security prison, currently houses 1,338 inmates.
