Earnest refers to Toronto as Cruz’s “other hometown team”

WASHINGTON (AP) — White House spokesman Josh Earnest is mixing politics and sports to jab at Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).

Earnest opened Thursday’s press briefing celebrating his hometown Kansas City Royals for advancing to the American League Championship Series where they will face the Toronto Blue Jays.

Earnest jokingly described Toronto as Cruz’s other hometown team, a reference to the Texas senator being born in Canada. Earnest said he’s open to a bet between the two.

Cruz was born in Calgary, Alberta, in 1970, while his parents were working in the oil business there. Of course, Calgary and Toronto are nearly 1,700 miles apart.

Earlier this week, the Democratic Party tweeted it was so excited about the presidential campaign debate that it almost forgot to wish Cruz a happy Canadian Thanksgiving.
